The modern automobile was invented in the late 1800s, although it traces its roots back a couple of hundred years earlier when Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens developed a type of internal combustion engine fueled by gunpowder. Karl Benz is generally credited with developing the first gasoline-powered automobile in 1885. In the early days, cars were very expensive. They were mainly used by the wealthy. But Henry Ford’s assembly line made it possible to produce them at a lower cost so that they were affordable for the middle class.
Cars have many parts, but the most significant is the engine. The engine is a powered by an internal combustion of fossil fuels such as gasoline, diesel or propane gas. The fuel is ignited by spark plugs which are connected to the ignition system of the vehicle. The engine then runs the wheels through a transmission system which transfers torque from the crankshaft to the axles and vice versa.
Automobiles are categorized into passenger carriers, goods carrier and special usage vehicles. Passenger carriers include sedans, hatchbacks and minivans. Goods carriers are trucks, pick up vans and trailers. And special usage vehicles are ambulances, fire brigade cars, school buses and police vehicles.
Besides the engine, the other important part of the automobile is the body. It is the outer shell that protects the mechanical components and the passengers inside. It is usually made of steel, but it can also be made of fiberglass or plastic. Today, all passenger cars must be equipped with safety features such as seat belts and child seats. And, they must be designed and built to meet specific environmental standards.
As the world’s population grows, it is becoming increasingly necessary for people to have access to transportation. Using public transport is not always practical, especially in urban areas. It can be very time consuming and often difficult to find space. Automobiles are the fastest, most efficient way to get around town and across country. It’s hard to imagine living without this modern lifeline.
